A war-time Services team photographed at the Brunswick Street Oval (Fitzroy) circa 1942-1944. The main clue is the presence of uniformed Army and Air Force men in the top row.

The jumpers appear to be Essendon’s colours. White shorts. Good number of spectators. Nineteen players. Bad emulsion damage at bottom of photo but no faces obscured.

Further Work Needed

All Military personnel appear to be RAAF, rather than army. So maybe a team from the RAAF competition, but no big name players. (Not ITS, or stores who wore a different jumpers)

In the back Row, the trainer/official second from left has a FFC emblem on his cap. The trainer on the far right is also wearing the same jumper as the other trainer. These may be trainers from the Fitzroy Club. VFL clubs provided a range of support to the Services competitions, incuding trainers.

The soldier third from left in the back row is acting as goal umpire, he holds the flags.

The lack of big names points to 1940. The intra-services competititons from 1942 featured prominant players who are identifiable. Maybe a curtain raiser game to a VFL match.

A big crowd
