LEAGUE FOOTBALLERS OF 1950 —ROVERS

The Argus 29-Apr-1950 P6

BILL WILSON is Richmond's No. 1 rover, his skill having been developed over a long period of service, for he has played in 141 games, and has kicked 101 goals. In addition, he has twice played in interstate games.

He was first discovered while a member of the Richmond District juniors, one of the clubs sponsored by the senior body. Cr. Bill Williams (president) and Mr. Bill Brown (secretary) told senior selectors about a talented youngster. He was almost missed, too. A fortnight after he was signed, there was a change in the district set-up. Wilson then lived in Northcote, and would have been tied to Collingwood

There was a period several years ago when he tried to do too much with the ball, and was frequently penalised for holding it. He and Jack Dyer, captain-coach, talked over the problem, and Wilson altered his style, with such splendid results that he eventually became the club's best and fairest player in 1947.

Wilson is a great disciple of physical fitness. He took an interest in boxing, and knows the art, although he has never done anything with it. He is always fit. Indeed, his friends say that he could play a game of football in the middle of summer, and play as well as if it were the middle of winter. He is a non- smoker and a non-drinker, and has always taught himself to stand on his own feet. He is therefore a most reliant person.

With his friendly outlook, dark curly hair, and a pleasant smile, it is no wonder he is called "Smiler" in the club.

Bill was married recently and is living in Malvern. He is an engineer in the Melbourne Harbour Trust at Williamstown. A younger brother, Charlie, tried to emulate his brother as a footballer, but did not quite measure up. Now he is a Richmond "fan."
