Date: circa mid-late forties

People: Jim Cleary

The individual player is South Melbourne (VFL) full-back Jim Cleary photographed at South Melbourne’s Lake Oval, circa mid-late forties. Cleary, nick-named ‘Gentleman Jim’ for his fair-mindedness, played 222 games for South, from 1934-48. As full-back he won South’s best and fairest award twice, in 1942 and 1944. He also represented Victoria. The football world was shocked when the gentle Cleary was suspended for eight matches following the 1945 ‘Bloodbath’ Grand Final against Carlton. He later coached Port Melbourne and Brunswick, and appeared as a commentator on Channel 7’s World of Sport.
