Team: Coburg (VFA)
Location: Coburg City Oval (Coburg)
Date: circa 1938

Tom Re (extreme left of top row)
Irvine (second from left in second top row)
Cairo Dixon (second from right, second back row)
Bannister (extreme left, middle row)
Jack Scanlon(centre of the middle row)

Excellent photo. This group does have the mien of a very serious football team, particularly when contrasted with some of the more raggedy groups in Boyles.

This is Coburg’s (VFA) Senior Team photographed at the Coburg City Oval, circa 1938-39.

At the centre of the middle row is Jack Scanlon who captain-coached Coburg 1937-39. Scanlon had previously played 67 games for St.Kilda (1930-36). Also identified in the photo (by means of 1941 photo in Coburg Football Club’s 1991 Centenary publication) are Tom Re (extreme left of top row, three games with Fitzroy 1936-37), Irvine (second from left in second top row), Bannister (extreme left middle row).

Intriguingly, the player second from right in the top row is the much-travelled Cairo Dixon. Dixon played for a succession of football clubs in the thirties era, in particular Coburg, Williamstown and Kew (Sub District ). See 122_208 - Probably Williamstown 1932(extreme right of front row); 122_106 - Probably Kew Sub-Districts Team 1939 - V1(fourth from left in middle row).

Coburg’s champion forward Lance Collins appears to be missing from the above group. Collins was suspended by Coburg in the latter part of 1938. His absence here could be interpreted as further evidence that the photo is from 1938. Collins is in Coburg's Team of the Century. He also played for Carlton 1942-43, 1945.

Same grandstand as in the photo 122_435 - Coburg Senior Team 1933. Grandstand packed. Good crowd.

Further Work Needed

Cairo Dixon appears to have only played for Coburg in 1934 and 1937-38. The photo is unlikely to be 1934. 1937 or 1938 is much more likely.

Peter Reville (South Melbourne, Fitzroy) played for Coburg in 1937 but not 1938. He is not in the photo.

Player front row far left is possibly Lance Collins.
Hair is a possible match -
The player second from right in middle row is also possibly Collins - albeit remotely.

Coburg Historical Society have a photo of the 1940 team on Picture Victoria, but the resolution is too small to see the faces. A better quality copy of this picture will assist in naming people in the SLV 1938 photo. Coburg in 1940 were blessed with two champion forwards - Lance Collins, and the incomparable Bob Pratt, ex-South Melbourne. Note their presence in the second front row.
