IN the upset that followed the appointment of a new captain at Hawthorn, COL AUSTEN left that club after years of grand service, and now has helped to make Richmond's half-back line one of the strongest in the League.
Col is probably one of the un luckiest footballers in the State. Last year he tied with Ron Clegg (South Melbourne) for best and fairest player in the League, and lost the coveted honour because he had fewer first placings. In other years he has been high up in the voting.
He had his first senior game with Hawthorn in 1940, and had played in 85 games when he transferred, frequently representing Victoria. Since joining Richmond he has impressed with his dash, his determination, and his concentration-he never gives up. He is a safe mark, and a good wet-weather player, with splendid ball control.
Employed as a clerk in the-State Electricity Commission, Col is married and a father. He plays cricket in the summer.
