DES HEALEY, like so many of our best players, had to wait for his chance to play "big time" football. He came to Colling- wood from the Preston Juniors, and played in the seconds for two or three years before being promoted to the senior side.
He played his first game at the opening of the 1948 season, and did not miss a game. Last year he missed only one, and that was when he was playing for Victoria in the State game against South Australia in Adelaide.
Good judgment is the real factor in his play as a wing man. He is a good mark for his size-he is 5ft. 6in-and always places the ball to the best advantage. He has the Collingwood habit of trickiness-he baulks, twists, and turns like an acrobat.
In the summer Des plays cricket with Collingwood, and could easily be a regular first eleven, player. He is a steady- and reliable batsman, who frequently makes his 50, and is brilliant in the field.
Des is employed in a newspaper office on the mechanical side, and lives with his people in Preston. That might not be for long, as he is engaged to be married. When that happens there will be football on both sides, because his bride-to-be is the daughter of Jack Bisset, former Richmond and South Melbourne captain.
