JACK HOWELL, of Carlton, is a ruckman of many-sided ability- which his great height helps considerably. Not only is he a grand high mark, but he is also a magnificent straight kick, as his tally of goals indicates. In 12 games last year- it will be remembered that he broke a finger while playing for Victoria against Western Australia on the M.C.G. on June 25 last-he kicked 40 goals. Some of them were from centre half-forward, and several from full forward, but mostly they came-when he was in the ruck. He has the facility of dashing out of the pack with the ball and popping it through goal.
Unlike most big men, Howell is extraordinarily good in his ground play. He is also one of the most accurate kicks in the game, and his drop kicks cover long distances.
Few players have more enthusiastic admirers than the 6ft. 3 1/2 in. 14 1/2 st. smiling Jack. He never seems to be- come rattled, and sometimes annoys rabid fans by smiling when he has been beaten in a tussle for the ball! This attitude indicates his great control and his sportsmanship even in difficult circumstances.
Jack was recruited from Chelsea in 1942, and has now played 82 games and kicked 140 goals. He is an enthusiastic member of a life- saving club, and in the summer just ended he has been playing cricket at Richmond as a fast bowler and a big hitter. He is a linotype mechanic at the Government printing office.
