Essendon (VFL) 1949-1954 - 98 Games, 537 Goals
THE SENSATION of last year was JOHN COLEMAN, the Essendon sharpshooter who, in his first season, kicked 100 goals. He is the nearest approach to a goal-kicking genius that we have seen since the Gordon Coventry-Bob Pratt-Ron Todd days, and he looks as if he will go on for years.
Already the experience he gained last year when he came into the side from Hastings (Mornington Peninsula League) has borne fruit. This year he has shown maturity and confidence. Moreover-and most important-he has shown that he is a team man, as he is not "goal hungry," and is perfectly happy to pass the ball to a team mate who is in a better position to pop it through.
Coleman played against Hawthorn in the opening game of 1949, and when he kicked 12 goals football fans began to realise that a new star had arisen. His deeds during the year helped to "make" football, and it is no exaggeration to say that the semi- final and final crowds were swollen by the attendance of those who wanted to see Coleman.
When the grand final started Cole- man wanted* six goals to complete his century-a record never before achieved by a player in his first year. He was fairly nervous, and did not play as confidently as usual. When the last quarter was begun he still needed four. Essendon were then well ahead, and players concentrated on giving him the ball. There was a mighty roar when in the dying minutes of the game he got the vital goal.
John, who was 21 years last November, has all the qualities that go to the make-up of a champion for- ward. He is 6ft. 1in. and 12 1/2 stone, which give him reach and weight. He has a tremendous leap for the ball, superb judgment, is something of an acrobat the way he twists and squirms into position, leads out like a hare, and is a straight kick.
He is a University student, but is working in a large firm while studying for his Commerce degree.
