DESPITE; his 16 years with Collingwood, PHONSE KYNE captain of the 1947 Victorian team it the Australian carnival in Hobart, ¡s still high on the list of effective followers. Naturally he is not able (o pace it with the young players, but his experience helps him over lots of hurdles. Phonse is another who knows how the ball should be given to his rovers, and Lou Richards and Bob Rose, who do most of the roving, should be grateful to him for the opportunities he provides. When Phonse first came to Collingwood in 1934, there were some grand players in the side. They included Jack Regan, the Collier and Coventry brothers, Marcus Whelan, Harold Rumney, Alby Pannam, Charlie Dibbs, Jack Beveridge, Percy Bowyer, Frank and Len Murphy, and Bruce Andrew (now Commonwealth Director of Football). It was also the first year of Jack Galbally, now a member, of the Legislative Council.
Despite that array of talent, the only game Phonse missed in his first year was the fourth, when he was an onlooker because of injuries. He was in attack in those days, and later became the regular centre half forward. For a few years now, how- ever, he has had to bear the heat and burden of the nick: in a period, too. when Collingwood has been short of followers.
In his long career Phonse has played in 238 games and has kicked 244 goals, and that is a measure of his value to his team.
