REG RYAN - "Dodger" to his friends-was tied up in various ways to North Melbourne, but it was not until he had been with various clubs that he returned to te the regular centre half-back.
He is a brother-in-law of Jack Wrout-one of North's best players until he was allowed to transfer to Carlton in 1936. His father was a member of the training staff at North. Then Reg was transferred to Carlton, too, and later he went to Collingwood, where he was full back in 1942, for some years. From there he went to Williamstown, and eventually found his way back to North without a clearance from his V.F.A. club. He played the last 13 games. in 1946, he and Jack McCorkell alternating at full back. He played in various positions later, including full back with the seconds in their 1947 premiership, but since 1948 he has been almost the permanent centre half-back.
Reg is not spectacular, but he is solid and dependable. When he can-not mark the ball he sees to it that his opponent has to work hard to take it. His drop kicking is delightful - few players can excel him in that.
He is called the "iron man" in the club, and it was a surprise when he was "knocked cold" in the opening game this year. He is well liked in the club, and takes a great interest in its affairs. He is married, with three children, and is a brewery employee. In the summer he does a lot of running.
