SLV Accession no H2008.122/19
Team: Richmond (VFL)
Location: Punt Road Oval (East Melbourne)
Date: 1955
People:
Top row - Brian Davie (89 games, 1953-59), Alan Cooke (116 games, 1949-58), possibly Ron McDonald (14 games, 1953-54), Kevin Betson (42 games, 1952-55), Ray Poulter (170 games, 1946-56), Alan Cations (104 games, 1952-57, 1959), possibly Frank Dunin (69 games, 1953, 1955-59), Ken McGown (13 games, 1954-56).
Middle row - John Claxton, John Nix (95 games, 1949-56), Frank Slater, Alby Pannam (coach, 1953-55), Des Rowe (175 games, 1946-57), Roy Wright (195 games, 1946-59), Kevin Dillon (88 games, 1949-55), Frank Ryan (62 games, 1951-57)
Front row - John Gorwell, Ron Branton (171 games, 1953-62), Geoff Spring (147 games, 1948-57), Lance Cox, Jim Deane (33 games, 1954-55).
My difficulty with being precise about the photo date is due to the uncertain identity of the two players resembling Patterson and Dunin. Patterson left Richmond during the 1954 season. This suggests 1954, not 1955. But, according to Main and Holmesby in The Encyclopaedia, Dunin did not play a senior game in 1954. If I had to bet, I would say 1955: Dunin is present, but not Patterson. In any case, the SLV descriptor 1940-1950 is well off-beam.
Deane, recruited from South Adelaide in 1954 with a huge reputation, played two seasons for the Tigers
Havel Rowe played in all but 2 games in 1954, John Claxton did not play in 1954. Ken McGowan only played one game in 1954 and Havel Rowe played that game, So it is not 1954
Tom Hafey and Havel Rowe played most matches in 1955 and they are not in the photo. Of the remaining matches, the most likely match is round 5, 1955

NSM Photo XX_M3333 identifies a number of players that match the round 5 1955 match
The NSM Photo identifies one player as Geoff Spring who did not play any matches in 1955.
If this is round 5 then middle row, third left cannot be Laurie Sharp. The following players should be present:
The player second from the right in the front row is possibly Laurie Sharp, but he did not play in round 5.
