SLV Accession no. H2008.122/6

Team: Carlton (VFL)
Location: Princes Park, Carlton
Date: 1941

Back row - Don McIntyre, Jack Wrout, Rod McLean, Ron Cooper, probably George Bailey, Ken Baxter, Frank Anderson, Arthur Sanger, probably Ron Savage
Middle row - Creswell Crisp, probably Jack Skinner, Jim Mooring, Jack Carney, Jim Francis (c), Frank Gill, Bob Green
Front row - probably Cyril Mann, Paul Schmidt

This is a 1941 Carlton (VFL) Senior Team photographed at home ground Princes Park. Jim Francis took over (from Brighton Diggins) as captain in 1941. Note that Paul Schmidt in front row seems to have a cap on and socks rolled down which does not elevate the tone of the photo.

The player second from left in middle row appears in Photo H2008.122/161.

This photo appears on page 331 of Brian Hansen’s The Blue Boys with the strange feature of Bob Chitty (absent from this Boyles image) added. See B. Hansen, The Blue Boys - the History of the Carlton Football Club from 1864, Brian Hansen Nominees, 2002.

Further Work Needed

Ken's original back row named 8 players, but there are 9 in the back row. Please confirm my identification of Ken Baxter.

The AFL Stats website allows us to work out that this photo is from Round 13 Date: Sat, 26-Jul-1941 which Richmond (84) defeated Carlton (83) by 1 point

Note that there are 18 players in the shot but 19 are listed for the match. Missing players should be from:
  • Bailey, George (See below)
  • Chitty, Bob
  • Mann, Cyril (See below)
  • Savage, Ron (See below)
  • Skinner, Jack (See below)

Cyril Mann is known to be in the photo, Picasa recomended a match to the player front row far left.

Back Row middle is possibly George Bailey

Back row far right is probably Ron Savage

Middle Row second from left is probably Jack Skinner
